These are my favorite things---today. My new Crocs garden shoes, handmade socks and spring tulips. I would have added my crock-pot(because I came home to supper already made in the slow-cooker) but it seemed to detract from the picture. I resisted buying the Crocs--even though my co-workers wear them all day and love them---but I decided they would be great for gardening. I can get them dirty and rinse them off!! But they are so comfortable--they may never make it out to the garden.

Tonite we went to our downtown library---one of our favorite places! Several years ago, the library acquired this large piece by Dale Chihuly and to be honest, I never cared for it. And it seemed to be shoved into a corner. But tonite I walked by and looked at it and it was absolutely stunning----sparkling red against the storm clouds rolling in. I am just glad I had my camera in my purse.

Good News and Bad News
Saturday, April 26, 2008
Last year Matt said it was "time to thin the herd" and get rid of some of the overgrown shrubs. So he pulled out 2 ugly "meatball" bushes and today we planted 2 dwarf burning bushes. There is something so satisfying about planting trees and shrubs. And as an added bonus, I found some old pottery shards in the soil.

Dan on a Jet Refueling Mission
Dan was invited to go up with the Ohio Air National Guard as part of the Educators in Flight program.Yesterday he went up in a Stratotanker on a mission to refuel the F-16's. He came back with some unbelievable pictures from the air. You can see the refueling nozzle with the F-16 and the bottom picture shows how close the F-16's are to the Stratotanker. And for all you Buckeye fans----they accomlished this task over Columbus!! The Stratotanker came from Rickenbacker AFB and the F-16's are based at Toledo Express.

Here's to the Earth!
Happy Earth Day. I pulled out my original Earth Day button that a teacher gave to me in high school. What I find most encouraging is that friends and coworkers have all been sharing ways they have been changing habits to protect our resources. I have noticed this for quite awhile and find it very encouraging. Ironically, at work we had an Earth Day cookout but they used styrofoam containers for dishes!

What is more uplifting than the sight of daffodils and hyacinths in Spring?? The sight of your car parked in your parents driveway and knowing that your Mom isn't driving it all over the city.. Ha Ha---Got you Adam!
Dan and Adam switched vehicles while Dan was working on his car. Today, Dan took my car in and Adam has been calling me throughout the day to make sure I am taking good care of his vehicle.
What do you do with a gorgeous sunny afternoon! Jump on your bike and go for a ride! We rode to Pearson Park and I always find it interesting to see the area maintained as The Great Black Swamp---which what this area used to be called in the early 19th century. After this swamp was drained, rich farmland was left behind. Please be sure and note the ice cream stand----NO we did NOT stop---we kept right on going!!

Grrrrrrrrranderson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our favorite tiger, Curtis Granderson, has been with the Mud Hens the last couple days as part of his rehab for a broken finger. Dan and I went to the game today and were thrilled to find our seats very close to where he was warming up. I got a little knitting in during the game and to make the day complete, our row of seats won the Tofts Ice Cream Strike Out player of the game treat.

The Early Bird Gets the Best Pictures
Because I get up at 5am during the week, I always tell myself I will sleep in on the weekends. But look what I would miss if I did. The everchanging colors of light play of the rising sun over our pond. And there is just something so magical about being the only person outside and listening to the birds.

It's Opening Day!!!!!!!!!!!1
Last nite we went to our first Tiger game of the season. We had a good long talk with the team and they promised to put some wins on the board. Here is a pic of Ordonez walking off the field after warming up. Matt might know who is with him---I think it could be Granderson. Unfortunately it was pretty cold so we left early----but they did pull off a win!

A Priceless Birthday Present
Today is my birthday and it has been a wonderful 2 days. Yesterday we celebrated with Matt, Adam and Jonelle and I received some wonderful presents. But, thanks to my brother, I was able to hear my father's voice-for the first time. As you probably know, my father died tragically young and my brother and I were both under 2 and too young to remember. After our oldest sister died last year, we found a tape that had his voice on it. My brother had it transferred to a CD and for the first time I have heard his voice. And what a beautiful voice it was----and on the tape---he was talking to 6 month old ME. And I was talking back---in baby talk. It was incredible and very emotional to hear this and something I am constantly thinking about. Thank you Ed for this present and thank you to my family for making my birthday very special. I love all of you!

The Kids are Growing!
Our tomato seedlings are getting big and have already been transplanted into a bigger container. They have sprouted their true leaves and have the scent of tomato plants. They are very high maintainance though---just like kids. We have to tuck them in at night--Dan built a "cradle hanging from a flourescent fixture to give them light at night. In the morning we take them down, give them a drink of water and place them in a sunny spot---and keep them warm. Hopefully they will reward us with nice juicy tomatoes!

Canadian Geese
I couldn't resist posting this Canadian Goose couple that visited our pond yesterday evening. We've never had them on the pond before---just in the field beyond. But they are one of my favorite creatures. They are monogamous and when one of them loses a mate, they have been know to show signs of grieving.

Blatant Advertising
I am pleased to announce that I have a spin off blog---and since this is my blog---I am going to self promote!! Dan and I have always been concientious about recycling and now I am going to take it one step further. Daily, I am going to re-think my actions and try to make a step to Recycle-Reuse-Reduce. Therefore, I have started a blog devoted to this purpose---to share my ideas with others. So check it out and if you like it, pass the word. We can do our part---one person, one day, one idea at a time. Here is the link. http://reuse-recycle-reduce-onedayatatime.blogspot.com/

Spring is finally Here--Winter is finally Gone!
Today the temp was in the 60's and sunny skies. One of our favorite weekends of the year--the first time we can really feel like winter has gone. All the neighbors were out working in the yard. Dan and I made our first official bike ride of the year to Pearson Park---saw 4 deer and 1 Model A! And tonite we went to our first baseball game of the year---to the Mud Hens! And the best part-------tomorrow will be a repeat of today!!

It's Willie Horton!!
Yesterday, we had the honor to wait in line 1 1/2 hours to get Tiger Legend Willie Horton's autograph. He was signing balls and pictures but when Matt came up and asked him to sign Matt's autobiography of him, he got chatty with Matt. He told him the book was in it's 3rd printing and they are making a movie. Matt asked who was playing him and he said he didn't know but they "will find somebody, I'm sure". He said he used the proceeds from the 2nd printing to buy houses for hurricane Katrina families. Something interesting and admirable about Mr Horton is during the race riots of the 60's in Detroit, he stood on top of his car in the middle of the riots, wearing his Tiger uniform and pleaded for Peace. Unfortunately, the masses didn't listen. He grew up in Detroit and still works for the Tigers today---as special assistant to GM Dombrowski, along with Al Kaline. Quite a Guy!!
