Here is the last chapter of my Dobos Torte story. The cake has been frosted in my freezer awaiting Christmas------and I think it was a success! The picture doesn't define the layers and I left off the carmelized sugar topping. I wasn't sure how to do that(my Mom didn't put it on either) and I didn't want to experiment with my Christmas dessert. So end of story-------and I am quite proud. I did a little research and the torte goes back to the mid 1800's when it was developed by a famous chef in Hungary. Most people assume it was called Dobos Torte(or drum cake as Dobos means drum) however the last name of the chef was Dobos. So-there you have it. The tradition will continue in my family into the next generation at least because I plan on teaching my sons how to make it. And look at the beautiful background. My sister in law, Lisa, knitted a set of dishclothes and they are gorgeous!!

Now I feel like I want to try my hand at this cake. Congrats on the success. Question, did you use the recipe in the cookbook, or do you have another tried and true recipe? Also, when it says chocolate bar in the frosting recipe, what size is it referring to? And what kind of chocolate do you use?

Thank-you so much for the tasty samples of your Hungarian pastries and the Dobos torte. They were delicious!! and alot of work I'm sure! It's nice to have recipes that are a family tradition handed down through the years. I make a type of cheesecake that my Grandma always made. I think I'm the only relative that makes it and during the holidays my family always expects it! I was really glad to have my family all together for Christmas although I know someone's mind was in 2 places! Hope to be going to Warsaw this coming weekend to see the kid's tree! Wishing you and Dan a very Happy and Blessed New Year

Joan--thanks for the kind words! Baking this holiday season was very special because I felt very connected to my Mom(who baked up a storm every holiday). Whenever she wanted to teach me, sadly, I always said "Later". It is so much fun to see Adam and Jonelle take such an interest in cooking! I wish you all the best for the New Year and am anxious to hear about your European trip(I am jealous!). Enjoy Warsaw--we had a great time last weekend. We will have to coordinate our trips and visit them at the same time in the Spring!! Michele

as my mom mentioned, the dobos torte was spectacular! you'll be happy to know that we used the cuisinart today and made some fresh salsa. adam did most of the button pushing, so he really used it first, but eh go figure. you'll also be thrilled to know that i posted today. and will hopefully be doing much more of it due to the holiday season ending. :)

ps-thanks again for cuisinart!!
